The exciting; the challenging; the memorable umpiring journey of the invincible umpire Mr. Piloo Reporter Freny Daruwalla Thane Piloo Reporter in conversation with me, Freny Druwalla (his granddaughter) happily quotes that Umpiring was fun for him. An umpire like Piloo Reporter made cricket an absolute delight to watch. Henry Blofeld described Mr. Piloo Reporter’s signalling of a boundary as “The Milkshake”, and Richard Hadlee even said he was “signing his autograph on the shot”) Mr. Reporter was near-infallible, he could also control proceedings and get a grip on the cricketers the way only few men in the white coat could. He stood in 14 Tests and 22 ODIs, including 7 matches in the 1992 World Cup. He talks about his journey from umpiring at the Kanga League, to the Ranji Trophy matches, to finally standing in white coat at the international matches. In 1986, Mr. Reporter and VK Ramaswamy became the first neutral umpires from India in a Test match featuring Pakistan and West Indies in Lahore. He was the only Indian umpire to be selected for the 1992 World Cup. He has also written his autobiography about his career titled ‘An Umpire Remembers’.
