They say the relationship between a daughter and mother is a soul connection that carries through a lifetime of tears and smiles. Najibah Easaw of Kumbanad, my great grandmother, was by all accounts, special. A “Madaama," meaning foreigner in Malayalam; she was 15 when she was married to a man 20 years older. By 16 she had her first born and at 17 she was whisked away, in 1929, from her country, Iraq, to faraway Southern India where she lived till 1985. It’s August 2021 and this recording is a well-prepared collaboration from Kerala by Marykutty and Lulu, her two living daughters, 92 years since Najibah set sail to India. They remember a brave, committed and kind woman, their “Mummy”.
