Deepak-Raj Gupta made history when he became the first ever Indian-born person to be elected to an Australian parliament. He was the Member for Yerrabi in the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly from July 2019 to October 2020. Deepak bhai, as he is popularly known, is a tireless advocate for India and the Indian diaspora in Canberra. This is the first of a two-part series of conversations that Sanjay Bhosale, Evergreenstory’s Consulting Editor, had with Deepak-Raj, where we discussed his journey from an international student in Melbourne in 1989, where he washed cars and worked late nights in hotels to sustain himself, to his election as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Australia’s capital city, Canberra.
